Day 58 – Malaysia Day 3 - KL Day 2

When we woke up this morning we went to Petronas Towers to see if we could take the elevator to the top. I guess they’ll only take you halfway to the top, or however high the skyway is between the two which is pretty lame if you ask me. Tickets to get that high are also sold on a first-come first-serve basis every day starting at 8am, but if you want a ticket you’re going to want to get there around 7:30am to guarantee yourself a spot. You can only buy tickets for that day and they usually run out within the first 2 hours. We did make it to the gift shop though :). They really seem to be into the rainbow colors when painting a picture of the towers or the city on shirts and souvenirs and stuff. It’s kinda weird and doesn’t really look good if you ask me. However, my fashion sense has been questioned quite a bit in the last two years. Aheemm..

After our failed attempt at getting to the top we looked around the mall that was located at the bottom of the towers. Again, very modern with a lot of American stores, but at a much more expensive price than we’re used to… not many good deals at all. We ate at the food court and I got this really weird dish. I’m not even sure if I can explain what it was. There were noodles (ramen-like), mushroom, chicken (I think), an egg, some rice, and this dark brown sauce that covered everything. They served it on an iron plate and the sauce was boiling when they first gave it to me. I’m not sure how else to describe it. It was pretty good though! Then we caught a taxi and headed to these well-known caves that are nearby. I’m not sure the name of them, or if they even had a name, but it was a Hindu place of worship. They were 272 steps up to the entrance to the cave (they had numbers on each step) and inside the cave there were places of worship for Hindu’s as well as a ton of monkeys that were just living there, playing in the caves and eating peoples garbage. The next stop on our journey around the city was the Central Market. Note that we don’t really know the location where any of these things are, we just rely on the taxi’s to take us there after we’ve talked their price down. Nothing has been farther than 20 minutes or so though. The central market is a little more like the mall that we went to in India. You can bargain with the people in the stores, things are a lot cheaper, and there’s a lot of little stores that you know you won’t find anywhere else. I bought 4 shirts there, including a Hard Rock Malaysia (that cost $40 at the actual Hard Rock) for less than $5 USD each. Of course the Hard Rock shirt is fake, but it looks real enough for me and my $5. Stuff is suppose to be even more cheap in Vietnam though so I didn’t go on a cheap shopping spree or anything like that.

After spending a few hours at the central market we headed back to hotel and just hung out by the pool for a couple hours before heading out to eat. Along with almost everything else in the hotel, the pool was pretty tight. It has a perfect view looking at the Petronas Towers, and was one of those pools where the water fills to the brim then falls off the edge. You’ll understand when I upload my pictures. It was nice and relaxing though.

We planned on going to this French/Paris restaurant that was just a few blocks away after everyone showered, but by the time everyone was ready it was down pouring. We waited for probably about a half hour for a taxi that would take 5 or for it to let up, but it never did so we ended up eating at the really nice restaurant that was in our hotel. It had a nice buffet with lots of Malaysian food and other authentic foods from that area of the world. It was a little more expensive when compared to other places that we’ve ate. Typically, food is extremely cheap everywhere here. You can easily get full off of a meal that will cost you no more than $3 USD. The extra price was worth it though since we didn’t have to get soaked in the rain and the food was amazing (and unlimited of course). They had these brownies for desert that were SO good. Still warm and gushy. Mmm.
